Financial Aid at Central European University in Vienna

By AustriaUniversities Editorial Team · 2026-10-02

Scholarships

Central European University (CEU) in Vienna offers financial aid based mainly on academic merit. You apply by the financial aid deadline, and candidates from any country can apply. The awards differ a lot by level: bachelor's, master's and doctoral students get different packages, and you need to know which one you are aiming for before you fill in the form.

What CEU offers at each level

CEU's financial aid is not one scheme. It splits into three, and the amounts are set out in the university's own information.

  • Bachelor's: a small number of partial tuition awards, which may cover up to 50% of the fee, up to EUR 4,000 per academic year.
  • Master's: a tuition award covering 50% to 80% of the fee. A full award happens only in exceptional cases. Master's awards can also include a stipend of EUR 300 to EUR 750 a month.
  • Doctoral: if you apply by the financial aid deadline you are automatically considered for the CEU Doctoral Scholarship. It covers full tuition and pays a stipend of EUR 2,002 gross a month for 48 months.

That last point is the one people miss. For the PhD you do not send a separate scholarship form. Applying by the financial aid deadline puts you in the pool.

The bachelor's and master's awards in practice

A bachelor's award of up to EUR 4,000 a year is partial. It reduces the fee; it does not remove it. CEU is a private university, so it sets its own tuition, and that tuition is separate from the public-university rules. For context, at Austria's public universities EU/EEA students pay no tuition only within the programme's standard duration plus two semesters, while most other students pay EUR 726.72 per semester as of October 2026. The compulsory student union fee (ÖH-Beitrag) is EUR 26.20 per semester for all students. Private universities work differently, so check CEU's own fee page rather than assuming a public-sector figure applies.

On the master's side, the 50% to 80% tuition award is the core of the package. Some students also get the EUR 300 to EUR 750 monthly stipend. Budget for the gap: if you receive 50%, you still owe half the tuition. If you are working out whether you can support yourself in Vienna alongside a partial award, our guide to showing sufficient means explains what the authorities expect to see.

Doctoral funding: the numbers, and what comes off them

The CEU Doctoral Scholarship is the clearest package on offer: full tuition plus EUR 2,002 gross a month for 48 months, if you apply by the financial aid deadline.

Be careful with the word gross. PhD stipends are taxable in Austria, and PhD students must register with the SVS health insurer and pay social security contributions. So EUR 2,002 gross is not what arrives in your account. Work out your net figure before you sign a lease. The university and the SVS can tell you how the contributions are calculated; do not guess.

Applying, and why the deadline matters

There is no central application portal for Austrian universities. Admission is organised by each institution, and the OeAD does not handle study applications. So your CEU application goes to CEU, and the financial aid deadline is a CEU deadline, not a national one.

If you are comparing options, note that CEU is one of 21 institutions in Vienna in our catalogue, alongside the University of Vienna, TU Wien, BOKU University, WU Vienna, Modul University Vienna, the University of Applied Arts Vienna and Hochschule Campus Wien. You can browse the full list of universities in Vienna or step back to all universities in Austria. CEU stands out on volume: the register lists 46 CEU programmes in the English-taught directory, more than any other institution. Across the catalogue we list 65 Austrian higher education institutions and 589 programmes with English among their languages of instruction. Of those, 455 are taught in English only and the rest in German and English.

Public universities follow different clocks. The general application deadline for most bachelor's programmes there is 5 September for the winter semester and 5 February for the summer semester, though other programmes and applicants from outside the EU/EEA can have different deadlines. CEU sets its own dates, including the financial aid deadline, so check them on CEU's admissions pages.

One more practical note: students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland need a Residence Permit, Student for a stay of more than six months. The application fee on oesterreich.gv.at is EUR 218, and the authority decides within 90 days. A scholarship letter does not decide the permit; the residence authority does.

How to compare CEU with other funding options

CEU's aid is merit-based for most full-time programmes. That is different from need-based aid, and it changes how you write your application: your academic record does the work.

If you want to see what else exists in Austria before you commit, start with our scholarships section. It is also worth knowing that programmes and fees on this site come from the Austrian national register (BMFWF open data and studienwahl.at) as of October 2026, so confirm any figure with the institution. That applies to CEU's tuition too: the register tells you what is listed in the Austrian national register, but CEU sets the fee.

Do I need a separate application for the CEU Doctoral Scholarship?

No. Doctoral candidates who apply by the financial aid deadline are automatically considered for the CEU Doctoral Scholarship. It covers full tuition and pays a stipend of EUR 2,002 gross a month for 48 months.
