How PhD admission in Austria works
You apply directly to the institution. There is no central application portal and OeAD does not handle study applications, admission is organised by each university or college. That means the first step is choosing where you want to do the research and checking that institution's doctoral pages.
Doctoral programmes rest on a completed diploma or master's programme. OeAD names a master's degree in the same field as your research proposal, or an equivalent, as the requirement for PhD programmes. The programme is built to show you can do autonomous research, lasts at least three years, and carries no ECTS credits. If you want to see what's out there, you can find programmes in our catalogue and filter by level.
Our catalogue counts 65 Austrian higher education institutions and 589 programmes with English among their languages of instruction, imported from the Austrian national register. Of those, 455 are taught in English only and the rest in German and English. Those are our own counts, and they give you a sense of the size of the English-taught offer before you narrow down.
Deadlines and paperwork
Because admission is decentralised, deadlines are set by each institution. The only general date in the public rules is for most bachelor's programmes at public universities: 5 September for the winter semester and 5 February for the summer semester. Other programmes, and applicants from outside the EU/EEA, can have different deadlines. So do not assume a doctoral deadline matches the bachelor's one, check the institution's own page.
If you are from outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland and will stay more than six months, you need a Residence Permit, Student. The application fee on oesterreich.gv.at is EUR 218, and the authority decides within 90 days. The residence authority decides on permits; the institution decides on admission. Neither decision guarantees the other, so plan both in parallel.
Tuition: the rule that actually affects you
At public universities, EU/EEA students pay no tuition within the standard duration plus two semesters. For a doctorate, the standard duration counts as 6 semesters plus 2 tolerance semesters, 8 semesters in all, for students who qualify for that free period. After that, tuition applies. Most other students pay EUR 726.72 per semester. Everyone also pays the student union fee (ÖH-Beitrag) of EUR 26.20 per semester, which is compulsory. Fees and programme details on this site come from the Austrian national register as of October 2026, so confirm the exact amount with the institution before you budget.

Funding a doctorate
OeAD does not offer scholarships for a whole doctoral or PhD programme in Austria, and it says there are hardly any scholarships for a whole degree programme. That changes how you plan: look for project funding, assistantships and fellowships rather than a single full-ride grant.
Euraxess Jobs lists vacancies and fellowships for researchers, and Euraxess Service Centres help with the move to Austria. That is often the most realistic route for a PhD, you apply to a funded position rather than to a programme and then hunt for money.
Some named schemes exist but are narrower than they look. Central European University's doctoral scholarship covers the full cost of tuition plus a stipend of EUR 2,002 gross a month for 48 months, for candidates who apply by the financial aid deadline; the stipend is taxable in Austria. The Ernst Mach Grant worldwide is for postgraduates and postdocs from outside Austria for research stays of 1 to 9 months, not for a whole PhD. The Indonesia, Austria Scholarship Programme funds Indonesian students in a doctoral programme at an Austrian university for 36 months.
For everything else, start with our scholarships section and then check oead.at for current calls. Treat any scheme you find as a possible part of the funding, not automatically the whole of it.
Choosing where to apply
With 65 institutions in the catalogue, the shortlist matters. Start from the research group, not the institution's name: a doctorate is a long, close working relationship, and the supervisor decides more about your daily life than the brochure does.
Then check the practical side, whether the programme is taught in English, what the institution charges, and what funding it advertises for doctoral candidates. You can browse universities to see the full list, and look specifically at the PhD level to compare doctoral offerings.
One habit saves trouble: email the doctoral office before you apply and ask three things, the deadline for your intake, the tuition that applies to you, and whether the position comes with funding. Get it in writing.
