Studying in Klagenfurt: A Student Guide

Study Guides

If you want to study in Klagenfurt, you have two institutions in our catalogue: the University of Klagenfurt (a public university) and the University of Teacher Education Carinthia (a university college of teacher education). The OeAD also lists the Gustav Mahler Private University for Music as a private university in the city. That is a small, focused choice, so you need to check each institution's own programme pages carefully rather than rely on a central list.

Which institutions are in Klagenfurt?

Our catalogue lists universities in Klagenfurt as the University of Klagenfurt and the University of Teacher Education Carinthia. The OeAD's institutions directory adds the Gustav Mahler Private University for Music. So you have one public university, one teacher education college and one private music university to consider.

That matters because admission is organised by each institution, not centrally. The OeAD does not handle study applications and there is no central application portal. You apply directly to the university or college you want to attend.

What can you study and in what language?

Our catalogue counts 65 Austrian higher education institutions and 589 programmes with English among their languages of instruction, imported from the Austrian national register (BMFWF open data and studienwahl.at). Of those, 455 are taught in English only and the rest in German and English. That is a national picture, not a Klagenfurt-specific one, so use it to understand the overall landscape and then check the Klagenfurt institutions individually.

Programmes and fees on this site come from the Austrian national register as of October 2026. You must confirm them with the institution before you apply, because the register is a snapshot.

What does it cost to study in Klagenfurt?

Two fees come up for almost everyone. The student union fee (ÖH-Beitrag) is EUR 26.20 per semester and is compulsory for all students. At public universities, EU/EEA and Swiss students pay no tuition within the standard duration of the programme plus two semesters. Most other students pay EUR 726.72 per semester. The exact amount you pay depends on your nationality and how long you have been studying, so check with the institution.

Living costs are separate. The OeAD's average monthly living-cost estimate for a student in Austria is about EUR 1,300, and the figure varies by study location. Klagenfurt is not Vienna, so your actual rent and day-to-day spending may differ from that average. Our cost of living guide explains what the estimate covers.

For accommodation, start with our accommodation guide. Student halls and shared flats are the usual options, and you should ask the institution's student services or the OeAD for local leads rather than assume a price.

When are the deadlines?

At public universities, the general application deadline for most bachelor's programmes is 5 September for the winter semester and 5 February for the summer semester. Other programmes and applicants from outside the EU/EEA can have different deadlines. So if you are applying from outside the EU/EEA, do not assume the general dates apply to you. Check the programme page and the institution's admission office.

There is no central application portal, so you will be dealing with each institution's own system. Give yourself time for document checks and any entrance requirements.

Do you need a residence permit?

Students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland need a Residence Permit, Student for a stay of more than six months. The application fee on oesterreich.gv.at is EUR 218, and the authority decides within 90 days. The residence authority decides on permits; the institution decides on admission. Do not treat one as a guarantee of the other.

Apply early enough that the 90-day decision window does not collide with your programme start. The exact documents and process are set out on oesterreich.gv.at and migration.gv.at.

What about Carinthia more widely?

Klagenfurt is in Carinthia, and there is one nearby option worth knowing. The Carinthia University of Applied Sciences has its seat in Villach, not Klagenfurt. It offers a TECH scholarship of EUR 8,400 each for four master's students from Europe, South America and Mexico, with a deadline of 15 May 2027. If you are eligible and the timing works, that is a concrete reason to look beyond the Klagenfurt city list.

For the full national picture, browse all universities in Austria. The catalogue's 65 institutions and 589 programmes give you a sense of scale, but the decision still comes down to the individual programme and its admission rules.
