What you will study

What you study

The Master's in Industrial Mathematics at JKU Linz is about applying mathematical methods and models to real problems. The programme concentrates on mathematical modelling and numerical simulation, and the main areas of focus are mathematical modeling, partial differential equations, numerical simulation, inverse problems, statistics and financial mathematics.

You take 120 ECTS in total. Mandatory subjects in Mathematic Modeling and Numerical Simulation make up 31.5 ECTS. You choose 36 ECTS from electives: Core Exercises, Mathematical Seminars, Geometry, Mathematical Methods in Engineering, Mathematical Methods in the Economic Sciences, Numerical Analysis, Optimization, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, Analysis, Knowledge-based Mathematical Systems, Number Theory and Soft Skills. Autonomous coursework accounts for 12 ECTS, and the Master's seminar, thesis and examination together make up 40.5 ECTS.

You learn to analyse data, spot patterns and predict outcomes so that companies and organisations can make better decisions. The programme also builds teamwork, especially in international teams, quick grasp of complex relationships, communication that gets to the point, and scholarly presentations in front of expert groups.

How the programme is organised

It is a full-time degree over four semesters, taught in English at level B2. The workload is 120 ECTS. The programme is hands-on: you can work on real-world projects directly with industrial and business partners, including your Master's thesis. The student-faculty ratio is low, so you get to know your professors and can start individual research activities early. Students have opportunities to take part in research projects and to connect with international partners and research institutions.

Industrial mathematicians at the JKU were involved in creating algorithms for the Extremely Large Telescope in Chile's Atacama Desert, which gives you a sense of the kind of work that comes out of the programme.

Who it suits

This degree suits you if you want to work where mathematics meets industry. Graduates of JKU's Bachelor's in Technical Mathematics are admitted without further constraints. Graduates of other undergraduate STEM programmes, at JKU or elsewhere, are also welcome. A prior background in Industrial Mathematics is not required, but you should have a strong background in general mathematics. If your mathematics background is not strong, you will need to complete certain supplementary courses; check the curriculum and contact the programme.

The programme is for people who like modelling, simulation and data, and who want to work with business and industry partners rather than stay purely in theory. If you are more drawn to computer science topics, the separate Master's in Computational Mathematics may fit better.

Admission, language and next steps

You need proof of English at B2 level. There is no central application portal: you apply directly to JKU, and the university's own page gives the application period. The admissions office handles applications. For questions about enrolling, contact the Office of Student Information and Academic Advising (SIBS).

On fees: at a public university such as JKU, EU/EEA and Swiss students pay no tuition within the standard duration plus two semesters. Other students pay a fee per semester. The university's page explains how to pay tuition and student union fees.

What the register says

The master's degree programme in Industrial Mathematics trains the students in applied mathematics, honing skills in how to develop and use mathematical methods to solve technical problems in industry and engineering. The programme focuses mathematical modelling and numerical simulation including topics such as partial differential equations, inverse problems and financial mathematics.
