What you will study
What you study
Medical Informatics is a joint English-taught Master's programme run by TU Wien and the Medical University of Vienna. It focuses on the integration of information technologies within the healthcare sector to drive innovation, improve treatment outcomes and support the digital transformation of healthcare. The field combines knowledge from computer science, medicine, biology, public health and related disciplines.
The programme starts with 30 ECTS of foundations: Advanced Software Engineering in the Biomedical Context (6 ECTS), Biological Basis of Disease (6 ECTS), Introduction to Medical Data Science and Analytics (6 ECTS), Introduction to Digital Health (6 ECTS) and Practice of Medicine (6 ECTS). You also take a seminar (3 ECTS) and a project (6 ECTS).
You then choose 42 ECTS of elective modules. At least 24 ECTS must come from one specialisation, and 18 ECTS from across specialisations. The specialisations are Bioinformatics, Neuroinformatics, Public Health Informatics, Mobile Health, Wearable, and Assistive Technologies, and AI and Analytics in Clinical Decision Making. There are also 9 ECTS of free electives and transferable skills; you may choose freely from courses at recognised national and international post-secondary institutions, but at least 4.5 ECTS must be from Transferable Skills. The programme ends with a Master's thesis (30 ECTS).
How the programme is organised
The degree is a 120 ECTS Master's programme lasting four semesters. It is taught entirely in English. The degree awarded is Diplom-Ingenieur/Diplom-Ingenieurin (Dipl.-Ing.), internationally comparable with a Master of Science (MSc). The programme is interuniversity: TU Wien and the Medical University of Vienna run it together. Full details of the structure and content are in the study plan and the list of courses at TU Wien.
Who it suits
This programme suits students who want to work at the intersection of computer science and medicine. It is for people who are comfortable with software engineering and data analysis and who want to apply those skills to healthcare, from bioinformatics to clinical decision making. The specialisations let you go deep in one area, such as neuroinformatics or public health informatics, while still gaining breadth across others. If you have a Bachelor's in informatics from an Austrian university, you are eligible for admission without supplementary exams.
Admission, language and next steps
Admission requires the completion of a relevant Bachelor's degree at a recognised national or international post-secondary educational institution. The Medical University of Vienna is responsible for applications and admissions. You can find further information regarding admission on the MedUni Vienna website. The teaching language is English. There is no central application portal: applications go directly to the institution, and its own page gives the application period. After the Master's, you can continue to a doctoral programme at TU Wien, such as the Doctoral Programme in Engineering, the Doctoral Programme in Natural Sciences or the Doctoral Programme in Social and Economic Sciences.

Before you apply
There is no central application portal in Austria: you apply to the institution, here TU Wien. A public university sets the admission requirements and dates for this level, so read them on the programme page. Our guides cover tuition fees, the student residence permit and housing.
Facts on this page come from the Austrian national register (BMFWF open data and studienwahl.at, which states the language of instruction). Fees are in euros as the register lists them. "Not listed" means the register has no figure, not that the programme is free. Always confirm requirements, fees and dates with the institution.
