What you will study
The Master's in Time-based Media at the University of Arts Linz is a 120 ECTS programme over four semesters. It sits in the interdisciplinary study of how artists work with time: video, film, sound, media installations and productions, interactive systems, design with digital media and programming. The teaching language is German and English, so the programme is partly taught in English and you should check with the institution which parts are held in which language.
What you study
The programme is built around your own focus. You bring an area you want to push, and the course explores the interdisciplinary links between the productive, receptive and reflexive sides of time-based media. In practice that means working with video in both practice and theory, film theory, sound, media installations and productions, interactive systems, design with digital media and innovative program creation.
Experimental, performative, spatial, cultural studies and art historical aspects feed into project development and theoretical training. The point is to give you a differentiated view of your own work and the ability to place it in the media industry and in artistic and scientific fields.
How the programme is organised
You work in process- and problem-oriented modules and develop your own artistic, scientific and transdisciplinary projects. The course also trains the steps around the work itself: formulating objectives, conceiving a project, developing it, elaborating it, and finally presenting the results. Teaching aims at independent work and teamwork. Students get individual support and supervision, and the course is meant to help you pin down your personal position.
Who it suits
It suits people who already work across media and want to sharpen a critical, questioning approach to artistic production, including its social relevance and ideological and political implications. If you want a fixed syllabus of set exercises, this is not that. If you want room to build your own projects with feedback, it is.
