What you will study

What you study

This master's programme is taught in English and trains biomedical engineers with a focus on medical technology, medical IT systems, health informatics and telemedicine. The two main areas are medical engineering and eHealth. You look at the development of medical devices from a scientific and electronic angle, and at software development.

You can specialise through electives such as ventilation technology, photonics, medical information systems or mobile applications. The programme also involves numerous research projects, including international ones, carried out directly at UAS Technikum Wien.

On the medical engineering side you learn to plan and implement the acquisition of complex medical systems used in hospitals and medical practice, conduct authorised training for technical and medical staff, manage ongoing support and operation of equipment, and take part in product and process development. You also learn to run scientific studies with medical staff and choose the right analytical methods.

In eHealth you analyse processes with users from medicine, care and social services, document them clearly and derive system requirements. You estimate the technical and organisational effort for IT networking projects and the integration of subsystems. You evaluate and select interoperability standards such as IHE, HL7, CEN, ISO, IEEE and PCHA, and contribute to planning and running regional, national and international IT infrastructures like telemedicine centres or the Austrian electronic health record ELGA.

How the programme is organised

The master's is a full-time programme worth 120 ECTS credits over four semesters. Classes are held Monday through Thursday during the day. The start of studies is at the beginning of September.

You can spend a semester abroad, with the recommended semesters being the third and fourth. The programme is also offered as a double degree with Brno University of Technology in the Czech Republic, UAS Luzern in Switzerland and Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro in Portugal. In a double degree the course of study and mutual recognition of courses are set out in a contract, and final exams are recognised by both institutions.

Who it suits

You need prior technical knowledge or interest, including in software development and electronics. Students come from technical bachelor's programmes or have professional experience, for example in a medical-technical environment. A basic interest in medicine is necessary. In healthcare a lot is based on experience and informal knowledge, and graduates must be able to deal with that in their daily work.

The programme suits people who want to design, build and use medical devices as biomedical engineers, develop eHealth applications, train medical staff, or work in medical technology and quality assurance. Graduates work in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, for manufacturers and distributors of medical devices and IT systems, and with regulatory bodies.

Admission, language and next steps

To be admitted you need a completed UAS bachelor's degree in a relevant subject or an equivalent degree from a recognised domestic or foreign post-secondary institution, worth at least 180 ECTS credits. If equivalence is basically given and only individual supplements are missing, the programme director can combine the determination of equivalence with the requirement of examinations to be taken during the master's programme.

The teaching language is English. Applications go directly to UAS Technikum Wien through its online application system, where you can register, upload documents and return to your application later. The programme's own page gives the application period. As a university of applied sciences, UAS Technikum Wien sets its own tuition fees; EU/EEA students pay a tuition fee per semester plus the ÖH fee, and non-EU/EEA students pay a higher tuition fee plus the ÖH fee. The programme page lists the amounts and possible exemptions.

What the register says

The Medical Engineering & eHealth master’s degree program is taught in English and produces biomedical engineers with an emphasis in medical technology, medical IT systems, health informatics, and telemedicine. The healthcare system is changing, technological advances and the use of mobile devices by patients are enabling new applications, for example in telemedicine, electronic health records (for example ELGA) or by means of apps for preventive healthcare. In addition, new and improved medical devices are constantly coming onto the market. The question is how these changes can benefit each individual and what the costs are. Graduates of this master’s program can design new devices, develop appropriate software, and have an overview of the entire system. They work with technology for the benefit of people.
