What you will study

The Master's in Computer Science at Graz University of Technology is an English-language programme that builds on a bachelor's degree in the field. It runs for four semesters and carries 120 ECTS. You graduate as a Diplomingenieur or Diplomingenieurin (Dipl.-Ing.), which is equivalent to an MSc.

What you study

The programme deepens your knowledge of systematic and automated information processing. You work with formal mathematical and engineering methods and bring findings from natural science and technology into computer science. The degree is deliberately methodological and algorithmic, which sets it apart from other IT programmes.

You build your own profile from a major, a minor, a free-choice subject and a master's thesis. The focal areas, each available as a major or minor, are:

  • Algorithms and Theoretical Computer Science
  • Data Science
  • Games Engineering
  • Human-Centred Computing
  • Information Security
  • Intelligent Systems
  • Interactive and Visual Information Systems
  • Machine Learning
  • Robotics
  • Software Technology
  • Visual Computing

Three supplementary minors are also offered: Embedded and Mobile Systems, Mathematical Foundations, and Statistics. Depending on your choices you might cover probability and information theory, combinatorial optimisation, deep learning and reinforcement learning, compiler construction, or computer graphics and virtual and augmented reality.

How the programme is organised

Teaching is in English. The structure gives you a lot of freedom to pick courses around your major and minor. You can join research and industrial projects during your studies, with tasks such as drone parcel delivery, games engineering or detecting chip errors. The faculty has a Human-Centered Computing lab, a drone space, head-mounted displays and computing infrastructure for machine learning and data science.

There is a double degree option with the University of Ljubljana. You spend at least one semester there, take 30 ECTS of subject courses and write your master's thesis for 12 ECTS under supervision from both universities. In total 42 ECTS are recognised at TU Graz. Thesis work with top universities and with regional partners such as AVL, Magna and Infineon is supported, and visiting international professors regularly teach and present their research.

Who it suits

This is for students who want a broad, method-heavy computer science education rather than a narrow specialisation from day one. If you like choosing your own mix of algorithms, security, machine learning or graphics, the major and minor system gives you room. It also suits people who want to try research early, through projects or a thesis with an industry or international partner.

Admission, language and next steps

You need a completed bachelor's degree in a relevant subject and proof of English competence. Graduates of TU Graz's bachelor's programmes in Computer Science, Information and Computer Engineering, and Software Engineering and Management are admitted without further requirements. Other national or international degrees are checked against the curriculum. You can complete the admission procedure before finishing your bachelor's. Registration for the academic year 2027/28 runs from 15 October to 15 December 2026. Applications go directly to TU Graz, not through a central portal. As a public university, TU Graz charges no tuition to EU/EEA and Swiss students within the standard duration plus two semesters; other students pay a fee per semester.

What the register says

In the master's degree programme in Computer Science the students will expand and deepen their basic knowledge in the field and knowledge about systematic and automated information processing technologies and applications. You will learn to use both formal mathematical and engineering methods and to integrate findings from natural sciences and technology into computer science. In this way specific application problems can provide an impetus for the further development of computer science basics.
