What you will study

The Master's in Geotechnical and Hydraulic Engineering at Graz University of Technology is a two-year, 120 ECTS programme taught entirely in English. It leads to the Austrian degree Diplom-Ingenieur/Diplom-Ingenieurin (Dipl.-Ing.), which is equivalent to a Master of Science (MSc).

What you study

The core modules give you a foundation in soil and rock mechanics, engineering geology and tunnelling, hydraulic engineering and water resources, and scientific methods. You then choose from a range of specialisation and complementary modules to match your interests. The options listed on the programme page include Computational Geotechnics, Case Studies & Geotechnical Monitoring, Ground Characterization, Tunnel Design, Geotechnical Design - Focus Foundation Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Methods in Hydraulic Engineering, Integrated River Basin Management, Integrated Flood Risk Management, Field Courses, Seminars and Projects, Dam Construction, Slope Stability and Earthquake Engineering, Tunnel Technologies, Data Driven Tunneling, Structural Engineering, Sustainable Infrastructure Systems, and Construction Management and Civil Engineering.

How the programme is organised

Teaching combines research-led instruction with extensive laboratory and field experience. You will work on project work, laboratory classes, field investigations, and your Master's thesis, addressing current challenges from both research and engineering practice. The programme is supported by laboratories and experimental facilities in geotechnical engineering, rock mechanics, tunnelling, and hydraulic engineering. Students are taught in small groups by internationally recognised experts, and some courses are held by lecturers from practice. Cooperation with universities, international organisations (ICOLD, ISRM, ISSMFE, ISAHR, ITA), and corporate partners from Germany and abroad gives you the chance to take part in educational exchanges and research projects, and to work on plants that are currently being planned and built. Individually supervised master's theses and internships are offered in many departments.

Who it suits

This programme suits students who want to design and deliver structures and infrastructure that perform safely under demanding ground and hydraulic conditions. It is for those who enjoy hands-on work, laboratory testing, field investigations, and solving complex engineering problems. Graduates go into engineering design and construction, infrastructure operation, consulting, and research, in Austria and abroad.

Admission, language and next steps

The admission requirement is a completed relevant Bachelor's degree. Graduates of TU Graz's Bachelor's programme in Civil Engineering and Construction Management meet the requirements in any case and are admitted without conditions. Graduates of other national or international Bachelor's and Master's programmes can find the exact admission requirements in the curriculum. You also need proof of English language competence. The language of instruction is English. You can complete the admission procedure before the end of your Bachelor's studies. Registration for the academic year 2027/28 runs from 15 October to 15 December 2026. Graduates of TU Graz and NAWI Graz students at University of Graz are exempt from the admissions procedure. Applications go directly to TU Graz; the programme page gives the application period and contact (studynoSpam@tugraz.at).

What the register says

The master's programme in Geotechnical and Hydraulic Engineering provides students with an in-depth engineering education in the field of civil engineering and its application. Through the three separate specialisation subjects of Soil Mechanics, Rock Mechanics and Hydraulic Engineering, it is oriented towards the current international development of the sub-disciplines of civil engineering. The programme follows the principle of research-led teaching. In addition to conveying in-depth subject-specific theoretical knowledge special attention is paid to conveying practical, social and media skills. In extensive laboratory and field exercises and during excursions the students will learn to develop concepts on their own and to implement them in practice.
