About FH JOANNEUM University of Applied Sciences
FH JOANNEUM University of Applied Sciences is a university of applied sciences based in Graz, in the province of Styria. It also has locations in Kapfenberg and Bad Gleichenberg. It is one of the larger universities of applied sciences in the country, with around 5,000 students and about 750 employees. The Wikipedia entry describes it as one of the largest UAS institutions in Austria.
The institution was established in 1994, and the campus in Bad Gleichenberg began offering health related degree programmes in 2001. Teaching is practical, project-based and interdisciplinary. Programmes run across six departments: Applied Computer Science, Engineering, Health Studies, Building, Energy and Society, Media and Design, and Management, spread over 26 institutes. Some courses have a specialised focus, such as Energy, Transport and Environmental Management, eHealth or Advanced Electronic Engineering. Student projects are a big part of the culture. The joanneum racing team, drawn from Automotive Engineering, Industrial Design and other courses, builds and races a car at Formula Student and Formula SAE events. Journalism and PR students produce the magazine blank each year.
The national register lists 56 programmes of all kinds and languages, of which 18 are English-taught: 2 Bachelor's and 16 Master's. Subjects include Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, Energy and Renewable Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Design, International Business, Business Administration and Entrepreneurship. The register category is Fachhochschule.
For an international student, the practical points matter. You apply directly to the institution, which sets its own application period and entrance procedure, so check the website early. Students from outside the EU/EEA need a Residence Permit for Students. At public universities, EU/EEA and Swiss students pay no tuition within the standard duration plus two semesters, while most other students pay a per-semester fee. Every student pays the student union fee. FH JOANNEUM has its own student union, ÖH joanneum, and an international relations department that handles exchange students, partner universities and German language courses.
The register in numbers
Fees are in euros as the register lists them. A programme with no figure in the register is "not listed" on its page, never free. At a public university, no tuition for EU/EEA/Swiss students applies within the standard duration plus two semesters, not for ever.
