What you will study

This is a full-time Master's programme at FH JOANNEUM University of Applied Sciences, taught in German and English. It runs over four semesters and 120 ECTS, and you graduate with the degree Diplomingenieur/Diplomingenieurin (DI). The campus is in Kapfenberg.

What you study

The programme trains industrial engineers (WING) who can manage both economic and technical teams. You choose one of three study tracks: Smart Production and Services, Business Transformation, or Supply Chain Engineering. Smart Production and Services puts AI and analytics at the centre, so you learn to analyse complex data and make decisions. Business Transformation focuses on questioning traditional business models, managing innovation and implementing change, with practical projects and collaborations with companies. Supply Chain Engineering integrates sustainability principles into the curriculum so you can shape corporate supply chains responsibly.

Across the programme you build knowledge in General Management, Supply Chain Engineering, Smart Production & Services and Business Transformation. You also take Business English at a high level, plus courses that develop intercultural, interpersonal, intrapersonal and social skills. AI tools and analytics are part of the teaching, applied in the way industrial engineers use them to drive change across a company and its value chain. In the second semester you lead a project team and carry out an Industrial Research Project on a current issue from national or international business practice.

How the programme is organised

The first two semesters are full-time. From the third semester the programme becomes part-time: classes are mainly on Fridays and Saturdays and in block weeks, with some courses online in the evenings. That structure lets you take up a full-time position from the third semester, and it also suits educational leave. The third semester is when you can spend a semester abroad, and in the fourth semester you can write your Master's thesis abroad. Several one-week intensive programmes support intercultural exchange.

If your previous degree is in Business Administration, you can pick up the technical ECTS you need in a technical transition semester by taking relevant courses from the Bachelor's programme in Industrial Management. If you come from a technical degree, you take industrial engineering orientated modules at the start; if you already have an industrial engineering degree, you take technical modules.

Who it suits

It suits people who want to work at the interface between technology and business, managing technical and economic teams. The part-time second half is aimed at students who want to keep working or need to balance family, work and study. If you are interested in digitalisation, sustainability in supply chains or leading change projects, the three tracks give you a way to specialise. The programme also expects you to develop your social and intercultural skills, so it fits students who plan to work internationally.

Admission, language and next steps
