What you will study

What you study

The Master's in Cyber Security at Salzburg University of Applied Sciences is about operational security: the practical side of protecting IT systems, networks, company data and critical infrastructure. You look at strategies and measures for defence, and you also deal with the legal and human factors that shape security. The programme builds on an engineering education and covers network and security technology, IT, mathematics and ethical aspects, plus entrepreneurial and social and communication skills.

Three focus areas run through the degree:

  • Operations Security: designing, commissioning and maintaining IT and network infrastructure, whether for a small company or a large corporation.
  • Attack-Defense-Simulation: the core of the training. In small groups you face a variety of attack and defence situations over two semesters, with structured feedback.
  • Human attack vector: people are one of the biggest targets, through manipulation such as disinformation campaigns or phishing attacks.

As a Master's student you are actively involved in the research focus areas of the Department of Information Technologies and Digitalisation and work on solutions to current scientific problems.

How the programme is organised

It is a part-time Master's degree over four semesters, 120 ECTS, taught at the Urstein Campus in Puch. The degree awarded is Diplomingenieur or Diplomingenieurin (DI). Each year 15 study places are offered in the part-time mode.

Teaching times are planned so you can keep working. There is one afternoon a week from 15:15 (Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, always the same day), up to 6 units. Friday is a full day from 08:15, up to 8 units with a lunch break. On average every second Saturday is a full day, up to 8 units, and about half of those Saturdays take place online, so roughly three Saturdays per semester on site. Each semester has a block week (Monday to Friday) in the middle of the semester. In the third and fourth semesters attendance drops from 20 SWS to about 17 SWS and 7 SWS.

Who it suits

This programme is for people who want to take responsibility for the design and protection of IT systems and critical infrastructure, working in implementation, advisory or management roles. The part-time schedule suits those already in work. The small-group attack-defence simulation means you should be ready to practise under pressure and give and take feedback. Because the course also covers legal and human factors, it fits people who want more than pure technology.

Admission, language and next steps

The language of instruction is German at minimum level B2, and about 45 percent of the courses are held in English. The programme is partly taught in English, so check which parts.
