What you will study

This is a part-time Master of Arts in Business in Digital Innovation at FHWien der WKW, a university of applied sciences in Vienna. It runs over four semesters (120 ECTS) and is built for people who work, including full-time. Teaching is in German and English, and you need at least C1 in both. You can write assignments and take oral exams in either language.

What you study

The programme joins three areas that are often taught apart: digital technology, innovation and management. You start with the technical and methodological basics, then move to a real innovation challenge, build a prototype and plan its launch, and finish with your Master's thesis, usually tied to your own work context.

The ECTS split is: digital technology modules 30 ECTS, interdisciplinary innovation modules 42 ECTS, a module on specific management topics 12 ECTS, research and development modules 30 ECTS, and a final overall exam 6 ECTS.

In the first semester you take Introduction to Software Engineering (Python, small projects), Cloud-based IT-Infrastructure, Data Governance, Innovation Management, and Innovation Teams and Networks. The second semester includes Technology Lab: Cognitive Systems, where you work with machine learning, generative AI, agentic AI and data science, plus People, Culture, Change, Project Work: Innovation Challenge with a company or research partner, and Technology Management, which includes a multi-day international field trip. The third semester is where you develop a prototype and plan its launch. About 80% of the programme is taught together with students from the Master's in Digital Technology & Innovation, so you work in teams with different academic and professional backgrounds.

How the programme is organised

It is part-time. Around 60% of lectures are online on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 pm. The other 40% is concentrated into eight on-campus weekends per semester, Fridays from 3:45 pm and Saturdays from 8:30 am. Classes are held at wko campus wien, Währinger Gürtel 97, 1180 Vienna, at the U6 station Währinger Straße/Volksoper. The programme starts each September. In the second semester there is a several-day international excursion. In the fourth semester, in certain cases, you may spend a semester abroad in connection with your Master's thesis.

Who it suits

It suits working professionals who want to connect business experience with technology and innovation. You do not need to become a developer, but you should be ready to learn how software, cloud infrastructure and data work, and to collaborate with technical experts as an equal. The programme also prepares you for coordinating roles such as Product Owner in agile prototype development. If you prefer to contribute economic, strategic and user-centred perspectives in mixed teams, this is the fit.
