What you will study

What you study

This master's programme combines biology, medicine and engineering. You learn to make biological tissues in the lab and to support the body's own repair processes. The curriculum was revised for 2025/26 and now includes specialisations in bioinformatics and bioengineering. You study bioprinting (3D printing of cells and biomaterials, testing of bioinks), gene editing (CRISPR-Cas9, knock-out and knock-in cells), biomechanics (finite element simulation, mechanical characterisation of materials and tissues), alternatives to animal models (3R principles, cell culture models), AI-based analytical technologies (image recognition, prediction analysis) and omics technologies (transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics).

You learn to generate tissues using suitable cells and biomaterials, characterise them and evaluate their therapeutic use. You also cover stem cells, bioreactors, bioprocesses for recombinant proteins, immunology and vascular biology, and the legal and financial side of approval processes.

How the programme is organised

The programme is full-time, taught in English, and lasts four semesters (120 ECTS credits). Teaching takes place on weekday evenings and Saturday, with blocked lab sessions on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons or evenings. There is a recommended optional semester abroad in the fourth semester, and a double degree with Linköping University in Sweden: you study the first year at UAS Technikum Wien and the second year at Linköping, and graduate with two degrees.

Who it suits

It suits you if you have a bachelor's degree in a relevant subject (at least 180 ECTS) and want to work at the interface of engineering and life sciences. The programme is research-oriented, so you should be comfortable with lab work, scientific literature and project management. The evening schedule may suit you if you need flexibility during the day.

Admission, language and next steps

Admission requires a completed UAS bachelor's degree in a relevant subject or an equivalent degree from a recognised institution (at least 180 ECTS). If your degree is close but missing some content, the programme director can require you to take additional examinations during the master's. The teaching language is English. Applications go directly to UAS Technikum Wien through its online application system; the programme page gives the application period. As a university of applied sciences, UAS Technikum Wien sets its own tuition fees.

What the register says

Artificial production of biological tissues and regenerative medicine are the focus of this research-oriented degree programme that combines biology, medicine and engineering. The students will be introduced to two new fields of biomedical science: The goal on one hand is to replace defective parts in the human body and on the other hand to stimulate the body’s own regeneration processes. The possibility of producing usable, natural human tissue such as skin, muscles or bones in the laboratory is one of the great challenges of medicine. International research and development of new therapies in these areas is booming.

Der Studiengang wird auch als Double Degree Program in Kooperation mit der Linköping University in Schweden angeboten
