What you will study
What you study
EMMA is a double degree master's run jointly by the University of Innsbruck and the Faculty of Science and Technology at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. The official teaching language is English. Elective compulsory subjects may be offered in English, German or Italian, so check which parts are taught in which language before you plan your year.
The first year is spent entirely in Bozen-Bolzano. Nine compulsory modules there bring natural science and technical knowledge together. The second year in Innsbruck is where you set your own focus: two compulsory modules plus several electives let you specialise in environmental and resource management, nature conservation, landscape ecology and planning, agriculture and forestry, or water and waste management.
Whichever specialisation you pick, you learn to do research, to work towards a goal and a result, and to work on a project basis while writing your master's thesis. The degree is a Master of Science, MSc, worth 120 ECTS over two years.
Admission, language and next steps
The programme is aimed at graduates of bachelor's studies in biology, environmental sciences, natural sciences and technology, agricultural and forestry sciences, or a comparable bachelor's degree. An admission or aptitude procedure applies, so check the programme page for how it works.
Applications go straight to the institution, not through a central portal, and the institution's own page gives the application period. At a public university, EU/EEA and Swiss students pay no tuition within the standard duration plus two semesters; other students pay a fee per semester.
Because the first year is in Italy and the second in Austria, plan the move early. Read the cooperation agreement details and the language of each elective on the programme page before you apply.
