What you will study

Production Science and Management is an English-taught master's degree at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz). It connects technology with business, and the programme treats the two sides as equally important rather than as an engineering degree with a few management courses bolted on.

What you study

The programme builds on engineering and economics knowledge you already have from a bachelor's degree. Teaching is grouped into three areas of specialisation:

  • Basics: methods for the technical and economic design of production systems, including material selection, planning of manufacturing processes, design of production processes and the intelligent use of information technologies.
  • Advanced Technologies: industrial work systems and plant layouts, ergonomic workplaces, product design to meet production requirements, and automation of production systems.
  • Management and Operations: corporate management and planning, marketing and controlling, technology management and product innovations, the link between business and production strategy in technology-intensive markets, plus supply management, production planning, production control and quality management tools.

Topics covered across the programme include Industry 4.0, agile management, digitalised production, product innovations and innovative materials. You also deepen your knowledge of production science, production technology and production management.

How the programme is organised

It runs over four semesters and 120 ECTS, and you graduate as Diplom-Ingenieurin or Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.), equivalent to MSc. The curriculum and semester plan are published in German.

Much of the teaching is practical. Regional industrial partners cooperate with the programme, people from business teach in it, and real tasks from industry are worked on during the degree. You have access to laboratories at the institutes of Innovation and Industrial Management, Production Engineering, Engineering and Business Informatics and Material Science, and to the Smart Factory, a model factory focused on Industry 4.0 where digitalised production technologies can be tested. The Schumpeter Laboratory for Innovation has laser cutters, water jet cutters, CNC milling machines and 3D printers, and there you develop a real prototype from idea to marketable product. In the LEAD Factory, a downsized production facility, you learn about lean management, energy efficiency, agile production and digitalisation.

In the course Product Innovation Project, students from different disciplines and nationalities work in teams on new problems from industry, supported by industry partners and researchers from TU Graz and international partner universities. The Gründungsgarage offers mentoring from business people if you are thinking about self-employment. Student association WINGnet organises networking meetings with business and industry, and is part of ESTIEM, the European network of industrial engineering students.

A Double Degree is possible with the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano in Italy: you study at both institutions and receive a degree from each. At TU Graz you complete at least 51 ECTS (7.5 ECTS from the compulsory module Basics, 12 ECTS from Factory Planning and Automation, 14.5 ECTS from Management and Operations, 17 ECTS from elective module catalogues C3, B3 and B4). At Bozen-Bolzano you complete at least 60 ECTS, including 25 ECTS from Industrial Mechanical Engineering, 5 ECTS from Entrepreneurship and Innovation and a master's thesis of 30 ECTS supervised jointly by both universities, plus 9 ECTS of freely selectable courses.

Who it suits

It suits students who want to work between technology and business rather than purely in one. The programme is aimed at graduates of Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering and Business Economics in particular, and it develops generalists who can handle technical and economic problems together. If you like the idea of planning production systems, designing products for manufacture and also managing projects, teams and corporate strategy, this is the shape of degree you are looking for.

Admission, language and next steps

The admission requirement is a completed relevant bachelor's degree. Graduates of TU Graz's Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering and Business Economics bachelor's programmes are admitted without conditions. Graduates of other national or international bachelor's and master's programmes should check the exact requirements in the curriculum. You also need proof of English language competence. The teaching language is English.

You can complete the admission procedure before finishing your bachelor's studies. Registration for the academic year 2027/28 runs from 15 October to 15 December 2026. TU Graz and NAWI Graz students at the University of Graz are exempt from the admissions procedure and follow separate instructions. Applications go directly to the institution, not through a central portal. Contact for questions: studynoSpam@tugraz.at.

What the register says

Technology and business, from components to digitisation, from corporate management to business model design in a holistic management system with a strong focus on production, are effectively linked in the degree programme in Production Science and Management. This degree programme combines a robust and broad basic education with specialisations in "Advanced Technologies" and "Management and Operations" at the highest level. On the basis of a scientifically oriented bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and Business Economics or an equivalent bachelor's degree engineering and economic basics are consolidated and deepened on one hand and production sciences are dealt with in detail on the other hand.
