About Anton Bruckner Private University

The Anton Bruckner Private University is a private university for music, drama and dance in Linz, Upper Austria. It is one of the music, drama and dance universities in Austria and one of the universities in Linz. It is named after the Austrian composer Anton Bruckner.

Music teaching in Linz goes back a long way. The city musical director Franz Xaver Glöggl founded the first music school in Linz in 1799, and in 1823 the newly founded Linz Musical Society set up a singing school, the real precursor of the institution. It became the Bruckner Conservatory Linz, and it was granted accredited private university status in 2004. From 1950 the conservatory established itself as a training ground for professional musicians, after the Linz Music School took over the training of amateur musicians.

The university covers classical music, jazz, drama and contemporary dance, with performing, pedagogy and research in each field. Students can study for a Bachelor of Arts or a Master of Arts. The Computer Music Studio handles music and media technology, media composition and computer music, and works closely with the composition, conducting and theory of music institute and the jazz institute. A Sonic Lab serves as an intermedia computer music concert hall.

The national register lists 42 programmes of all kinds and languages for the institution, and 2 of them are taught in English, both at Master's level. The subjects in the register are Music & Performing Arts and Curriculum & Instruction. The register category is Universität, with the type given here as private, so this is a private university, not a public one.

For an international student, the practical points are these. You apply directly to the institution, which sets its own application period and entrance procedure, so check its website for the dates and requirements. Students from outside the EU/EEA need a Residence Permit, Student. At public universities, EU/EEA and Swiss students pay no tuition within the standard duration plus two semesters, and most other students pay a per-semester fee. Every student pays the student union fee. The Upper Austrian Provincial Government gives particular support to artistic education, and the university says its tuition fees are moderate compared with similar institutions.

Fees are in euros as the register lists them. A programme with no figure in the register is "not listed" on its page, never free. At a public university, no tuition for EU/EEA/Swiss students applies within the standard duration plus two semesters, not for ever.
