About Modul University Vienna

Modul University Vienna is a private university in Vienna, founded in 2007. It was set up by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry together with the Saudi-Austrian businessman Mohamed Bin Issa Al Jaber, with support from the City of Vienna and the Vienna Tourist Board. The founders wanted internationally oriented, hands-on studies in tourism research, information technology and public administration, drawing on Vienna's role in European city tourism. The name comes from the Modul Tourism College, a hotel management school the Chamber founded in 1908, whose building and adjacent hotel are made of connected octagonal modules in Döbling. Attending that college is not a requirement for admission here.

The university focuses on social and economic development, with teaching and research in tourism, new media information technology, sustainability, business management and public governance. Its research priorities rest on sustainability, economics and innovation, and these principles run through the study programmes. The institution is organised into five schools: Sustainability, Governance, and Methods; Tourism and Service Management; International Management; International Relations; and Applied Data Science. Two research institutes sit alongside them, one for new media technology and the Vienna Institute for Global Studies. The university has been reaccredited by the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria, and its tourism programmes have been certified under the UNWTO TedQual scheme.

The Austrian study programme register lists Modul University Vienna as a private university with its seat in Vienna. It records 11 English-taught degree programmes: 6 bachelor's, 4 master's and 1 PhD or doctorate. The subjects taught span tourism management, international business, data science, hospitality management, sustainable development, economics and business administration. All programmes are taught in English, and the bachelor's and master's degrees offer specialisations and electives beyond the core subjects.

For an international student, the practical side works like this. You apply directly to the university, which sets its own application period and entrance procedure, so check its website for the dates and requirements rather than going through a central Austrian portal. Students from outside the EU/EEA need a Residence Permit for Students. As a private university, Modul University Vienna is not covered by the rule that public universities charge no tuition to EU/EEA and Swiss students within the standard duration plus two semesters, so expect tuition fees set by the institution. Every student also pays the student union fee each semester.

Fees are in euros as the register lists them. A programme with no figure in the register is "not listed" on its page, never free. At a public university, no tuition for EU/EEA/Swiss students applies within the standard duration plus two semesters, not for ever.
