It runs for 2 years (4 semesters) and carries 120 ECTS credits. The register gives Wels as the campus town. It lists the academic degree as Master of Science in Engineering, MSc. University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria is a university of applied sciences in Upper Austria.

What you will study

The Automotive Mechatronics and Management master's at FH Upper Austria is taught in English at the Wels campus. It is a full-time Master of Science in Engineering over four semesters and 120 ECTS. One thing to know first: the programme is being developed into the English-language programme "Digital Engineering & Industrial AI", subject to approval by AQ Austria. Applications for Automotive Mechatronics and Management are no longer accepted, and the programme page directs applicants to Digital Engineering & Industrial AI instead.

What you study

The programme starts from a simple observation: vehicle engineering has merged mechanics, electronics and informatics. Comfort, safety and efficiency functions in modern vehicles only work through mechatronic systems. The curriculum is built around that mix, with social and business economics competences added.

The study plan splits the 120 ECTS like this:

  • Automotive Technology & Mechatronics: 50 ECTS
  • Projects & Master's Thesis: 43 ECTS
  • Management: 19 ECTS
  • Social Skills: 6 ECTS
  • Elective Courses: 4 ECTS

In the first two semesters there is room for individual qualification worth 4 ECTS. Electives of up to 4 ECTS sit in the third semester. You choose your project topics and the focus of your master's thesis around the work you want to do later.

How the programme is organised

Teaching runs full time, but the timetable leaves space for work. Monday and Tuesday in semesters two and three are kept free for internships, so some lectures move to Friday evenings and Saturdays. The fourth semester is generally free of teaching.

Practice runs through the whole degree. The third-semester project and the master's thesis are ideally done for and at a company, and the programme supports students through the application and the project itself. Many professors and lecturers work in the automotive industry or close to it. Students can also spend the fourth semester at one of around 100 international partner universities.

Who it suits

This is for engineers who want to build complete mechatronic systems rather than single components, and who can weigh quality and cost while doing it. The target group is a mix of Austrian and international students, so the classroom is international by default.

It also suits people who plan to work part-time while studying. Students often start part-time work from the second semester and almost all do from the third. In the fourth semester, students have been employed by a company and written the thesis there.

Admission, language and next steps

You need a completed bachelor's degree of 180 ECTS or equivalent in Electromechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related subject area, plus solid English language skills. The teaching language is English.

Applications for this programme are no longer accepted. The page says applications can be submitted to Digital Engineering & Industrial AI, so check that programme's own page for the application period and admission process. There is no central application portal: you apply directly to the institution. Costs information covers tuition fees and the ÖH (Austrian Student Union) fee, and the programme page links to it.

What the register says

Rapid developments in vehicle engineering have led to a merging of the fields of mechanics, electronics and informatics. One cause of this is that vehicles meet customer demands by the optimal interplay of various mechanical and electronic components. Many functions in the areas of comfort, safety and efficiency are only made possible by mechatronic systems. In this context specific expertise in the mechatronic disciplines, combined with social and business economics competences, will be central requirements of future employees and managers in the motor vehicle industry. Precisely these requirements are the focus of the master’s degree programme.
