What you will study

The European Health Economics & Management master's is a joint degree run by MCI in Innsbruck with the University of Bologna, the University of Oslo and Erasmus University Rotterdam. You study at a minimum of two of the four partner universities, and the first semester is held at the University of Bologna. Teaching is in English.

What you study

The first semester in Bologna covers the basics of the healthcare sector: economics, management, law, political science and research methods. From the second semester you pick one of four specialisations:

  • Management of Healthcare Institutions
  • Economic Evaluation in Healthcare
  • Economics & Policy
  • Population Health Management

The curriculum splits into fundamental courses (25%), two specialisation blocks (25% each) and the master thesis (25%). Intercultural learning runs through the specialisations, with events such as a Summer School and a Career Event.

How the programme is organised

It is a full-time degree over four semesters, 120 ECTS. Classes usually run Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 12:15 and/or 13:30 to 16:45, in blocked units. In exceptional cases teaching or exams can fall outside these times or on a Saturday. Where you spend the second, third and final semesters depends on your specialisation: classes are held at MCI, Bologna, Oslo and Erasmus Rotterdam. In the second year you can join an optional mentoring programme that pairs you with faculty and practice partners and helps you find a thesis topic and job openings. The programme works with partner organisations, so you get practical experience during your studies.

Who it suits

You need a completed bachelor's degree and a grade average comparable to an Austrian Gut. The programme is for graduates who want an international career in health economics and management, in hospitals, insurers, international organisations, pharma or consulting. You should be ready to move between countries and to work in English with a mixed international group. MCI describes its teaching as small groups with business experts and guest speakers.

Admission, language and next steps

Applications go through the joint Eu-HEM admission process, not a central Austrian portal. You apply online with a motivation letter, CV, English certificate and a signed declaration accepting the participation costs. The English certificate must be no older than two years at the deadline. Accepted proofs include TOEFL iBT with a total of 90 and at least 19 in reading, 20 in listening, 20 in speaking and 24 in writing (MyBest Score is not accepted); IELTS Academic with 6.5 overall and 6.5 in each component; or PTE Academic with 62 overall and 58 in each component. Some applicants are exempt, for example those with IB English at Higher Level with a minimum of 4 or Standard Level with 6, or Cambridge CPE grade A or CAE grades A to C passed in 2005 or later. You can apply before your bachelor's certificate arrives; submit your latest transcript and hand in the certificate before you start. Early application is advised because visa procedures can take three months or more. MCI lists four application dates on its page. The degree awarded is a Master of Arts in Business (MA) in Austria, with equivalent titles from the partner universities.
