What you will study
The Master's in Entrepreneurship & Tourism at MCI in Innsbruck is a two-year, 120 ECTS programme that treats tourism as a business you run, not just a sector you study. It is taught in German and English, and the two majors split along language lines, so check which parts you would actually attend in each language.
What you study
The programme aims to professionalise entrepreneurship in the tourism and leisure industry. Digitalisation, sustainability and consumer behaviour are built into the curriculum, alongside trends and developments in international tourism. Independent entrepreneurial thinking runs through the whole course.
You pick one of two majors, which differ in around 25% of the courses:
- Strategic Management & Tourism (in German): family-owned businesses and the strategic challenges they pose. The curriculum stresses leadership, destination management, tourism marketing and international tourism, with modules in entrepreneurship, law, family business management, development and innovation, and academic research.
- Marketing Management & Tourism (in English): market management as shaped by social media, plus digitisation, brand management and consumer behaviour. Modules cover entrepreneurship, leadership, tourism marketing, digital marketing, international tourism, destination management, development and innovation, and academic research.
Soft skills such as leadership, innovation and intercultural competencies are taught in a tourism context. You discuss competitiveness of businesses and destinations with international experts.
How the programme is organised
It is full-time with a job-friendly time model. The winter semester runs mid-September to the end of December, the summer semester mid-March to the end of June, so semesters fit around the tourism seasons. Courses are generally 15 weeks plus an examination period, with blocked units for intensive work on single topics. Seminars and lectures run Wednesday to Friday, occasionally Saturday, at 8 teaching units of 45 minutes per day. Exams, guest lectures and excursions can fall outside those times.
International study tours follow the motto "We make the world our classroom", with visits to destinations such as Dubai, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Las Vegas or Hawaii and guest lectures at partner universities. An optional semester abroad is possible at one of over 300 partner universities, and the final thesis can be written abroad.
Who it suits
People aiming at an international career in tourism and leisure who want to develop tourism at an entrepreneurial level. The Strategic Management major targets future managers of tourism businesses and family enterprises; the Marketing Management major suits those drawn to tourism marketing. Because teaching runs Wednesday to Friday, you can keep working or gain practical experience alongside study.
Admission, language and next steps
You need a Bachelor degree, especially in business sciences with a focus on tourism and leisure. Graduates in economics need at least 45 ECTS credits in economics and ideally at least one year of work experience in tourism and leisure. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and go directly to MCI, not through a central portal; the institution's page gives the application periods and interview dates. Step one is an online application with CV, letter of motivation and details of your education, career, social achievements and goals. Step two is an online admission interview about your motivation and plans. You hear the decision within three weeks. You may apply for several programmes if you explain each motivation. Recognition of previous exams or credits is requested from the Program Director and only decided after a positive admission decision, and only for individual classes. Graduates receive the Master of Arts in Business (MA).
