What you will study

What you study

The Master's in Mechatronics, Smart Technologies at MCI is a full-time English-taught degree. It builds on electrical engineering, mechatronics, computer science and smart technologies. The core topics are control systems engineering, drive systems, power electronics, multibody simulation and electrodynamic simulation. You then pick an elective track: Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. In Electrical Engineering you can specialise in electrodynamics, non-linear electronics, embedded computing and electromagnetic simulation. In Mechanical Engineering the specialisations are machine dynamics, hydraulics, finite elements and the strengths of materials. Both tracks cover mechatronics and control engineering, electro-mechanical simulation, robotics and image processing, plus management, leadership and process management. A transdisciplinary project is part of the electives.

How the programme is organised

The degree runs over four semesters and 120 ECTS. Teaching mixes lectures, laboratory activities, projects and technical case studies. Classes are held on weekdays in blocked units, usually from 9:00 to 12:15 and from 1:00 to 4:15. The curriculum is split into core mechatronics (28%), projects and technical case studies (13%), electives (23%), management and key competencies (6%), and the master thesis and seminar (30%). You can add a double degree with partner universities in Paris or Boone, USA. That extends the programme to five semesters: two at MCI, two abroad, and a joint master thesis in the fifth. You then receive the degree from both institutions. There is also the option of a semester at one of over 300 partner universities or writing the final thesis abroad.

Who it suits

This programme is for graduates of bachelor or diploma programmes in engineering or natural sciences whose curriculum includes at least 75 relevant ECTS. It follows on well from Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering & Management, Environmental Engineering, Process & Energy Engineering, Production Engineering, Automation Technology, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Construction Engineering and Electrical Engineering. The programme adds management, leadership, entrepreneurship and start-up skills to the technical work, so it suits people who want to move into leading positions in industry. Graduates work in the automotive industry, special machine construction and semiconductor engineering, among other fields.

Admission, language and next steps

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and go directly to MCI, not through a central portal. You apply online with a CV, a letter of motivation and details of your education, qualifications, professional career, social achievements and goals. MCI informs you of the decision within three weeks after the interview. The programme is taught in English. The final decision on whether your previous qualification is acceptable rests with the Programme Director. Recognition of exams or credits from other programmes is only considered after a positive admission decision and only for individual classes. Graduates can enter doctoral studies in technical sciences under Federal Law Gazette II No. 241/2009.
