What you will study

What you study

This is a four-year BBA in Tourism, Hotel Management and Operations, taught in English at Modul University Vienna, a private university. It carries 240 ECTS and runs over eight semesters. Classes are small: 30 students per class.

The first year is hands-on hotel work. You take The Hospitality Industry, Food & Beverage Management & Controlling, Culinary Theory & Practice I and II, Restaurant & Service Management I and II, Hotel Management & Operations, Rooms Division Management, Hotel Business Simulation, Facility Management, and Human Relations & Personal Development.

In the second year you move into business basics: Marketing & Consumer Behavior, Accounting & Management Control I and II, Math & Statistics I and II, Microeconomics, Critical Thinking & Problem Solving, Advanced Business Communication, Sustainability Literacy for Business, Organizational Behavior & Corporate Social Responsibility, Academic Writing, and Principles of Business Law.

The third year adds financial management and analysis. Courses include HR Management & Management Development, Financial Management & Investment Planning, Macroeconomics, New Media & e-Business Applications, Tourism & Hospitality Business Analysis, and an Internship Preparatory Course. Semester 6 is a five to six month internship of 960 hours.

The final year covers Marketing Research & Empirical Project, Service Operations Management, Latest Trends in Tourism, Hospitality & Events, Revenue Management & Distribution, Hotel Asset Management, Managing Talent, Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Business Planning, Hotel Business Development Strategies, Hotel Property Development, Strategic Hotel Management, and a Bachelor Thesis with a tutorial.

How the programme is organised

Teaching mixes lectures with practical work. You do culinary and restaurant service courses, a hotel business simulation, and a 960-hour internship. The programme also includes industry projects that solve real business challenges and study trips to global destinations.

There is an optional New York extension: spend your practical year at The City College of New York. A surcharge applies for that year.

Modul University Vienna says it is the only university in Austria with UN Tourism TedQual accreditation for all its tourism programmes.

Who it suits

This suits someone who wants to run hotels, restaurants or tourism businesses, not just study them. You should be ready for kitchen and service practice in the first year, and for a long internship later. It also fits students aiming at corporate hospitality, events, luxury services or a hospitality start-up.

Because the programme is taught in English, you need at least B2 English. The admissions page lists accepted tests: TOEFL iBT, IELTS, Cambridge FCE, Pearson PTE Academic and Duolingo English Test, with minimum scores given there.

Admission, language and next steps

Applications go directly to Modul University Vienna through its application portal, not through a central Austrian portal. You submit a CV, a letter of motivation, your high school certificate and transcripts, a passport copy, a passport-sized photo, proof of English at B2, and a recommendation letter plus certificates from extracurricular activities. All documents must be in English and in PDF format.

If you do not meet all requirements, you may be admitted on condition that you first complete the university's one-semester Foundation Program. You do not apply separately for it.

As a private university, Modul University Vienna sets its own tuition fee. The programme page states a fee per semester; check the current amount with the university. EU/EEA and Swiss students do not automatically pay no tuition at private universities, so confirm the fee directly.

Next step: check the programme page for the application period and contact the student recruitment team with any questions about your documents or English certificate.
