What you will study

What you study

The Master's in Information Management at the University of Klagenfurt mixes business administration with computer science. The programme is built on required subjects in Informatics, Information Systems, and Information and IT Management, plus Complementary Skills. You then pick a specialisation in Information Management and one in Business Economics, and add additional competencies and optional subjects. The curriculum names courses such as Data Engineering, Fundamentals of Knowledge Engineering, Advanced Software Engineering, Software Project Management, Process Engineering, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, Interoperability, Information Search & Recommendation Systems, IT-Management, Security Management, Supply Chain Planning, Risk Management and Value based Management. A master's thesis with a research seminar (26 ECTS) completes the degree.

How the programme is organised

The degree runs over four semesters and carries 120 ECTS. Courses and examinations are generally held in English. A mandatory practical semester is part of the programme: a placement or practical project of at least 10 weeks, worth 15 ECTS, in a company, public administration body, non-profit organisation or non-university research institution. You are encouraged to do it in the second or third semester, and it cannot fall in your final registered semester. The internship needs approval from a supervising university lecturer, and afterwards you take a 1 ECTS seminar where you present and write up what you learned. Lecturers from the business world teach on the programme. The curriculum recommends a semester abroad, usually in the second or third semester, and there are double degree agreements in information management.

Who it suits

This programme suits people who want to work at the interface between business and IT. You should be comfortable with both sides: designing information systems and understanding how a company runs. The programme trains you to develop IT solutions from a business administration perspective and to apply them in practice. Graduates go on to design, introduce, support and develop information systems and networks typical of e-Business, manage the interface between business applications and system technology, take responsibility for the entire internal information system in small and medium-sized companies, and manage small software applications. The small classes and manageable working groups in Klagenfurt mean you get to know your fellow students quickly.
